Quite recently, I applied for registration as a Cultural Worker at the Ministry of The Arts and Multiculturalism. This process was developed to list cultural workers and I imagine, to establish a database of persons like myself, that may work in an industry, but be somewhat isolated from it in the daily operation of their businesses. This may not be as widely understood a phenomenon as one may think. However, In the development of creative or what is termed cultural work, there is great deal of research, Individual product development, countless hours of trial and error and then some more, that goes into the finished work.

This process can be done in a more social manner of course, chatting with others about your ideas and even inviting their assistance into the process. I have found tho, this way can sometimes slow the process and in some cases, dilutes the originally intended idea for the production. Of course, there is value in the ideas and opinions of others, but in some cases I have found that in the creative process, at least for me, less has been more.

Take for example two shows that I am currently in the process of producing. These cover Real Estate and Factory Operations and move from Lifestyle type production to more of a Documentary styled approach, both with their own target audience, age group and other demographic considerations. These shows have been in the planning and development stages since 2007, today in 2013 I am just beginning to see the development of one, while the other is on its way to a fourth season, having been started in 2009.

Interestingly enough, this movement only happened after I took these projects up on my own and poured countless hours into their research, development and thoughtfully approaching what I really wanted these productions to be , giving it the defining stamp of a “Cultural Work” and not just another Audio Visual Production.

As a Recipient of this Certificate, I feel the proposed assistance that it will offer Corporate Sponsors grants some validation to the creative and cultural work that I produce, giving me that distinguished title among the cool folk of, Filmmaker, less commercial a title than Producer but alluding to more of the Directing, Editing, Narrating, Script Writing and more, than goes into every, Cultural work that I produce. Tho honestly  I consider myself nowhere near any of the above.

In any event, In an occupation that can be sometimes solitude work, I embrace any opportunity to be recognized as “Certified” in my field and of course, anything that makes it easier to approach the delicate negotiation that is Sponsorship,  is certainly worth blogging about.
